What is RMO?
The Regional Mathematical Olympiad (RMO) is the second stage of India's Mathematical Olympiad pathway — conducted by the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE), TIFR, along with regional coordinators across the country.
RMO is where students leave the multiple-choice comfort zone behind. It's a fully proof-based exam — six problems, each requiring a complete, rigorous written solution — marking a major step up from IOQM's short-answer format.
Eligibility Criteria
- No direct registration — eligibility is earned via IOQM qualification
- Must score at least ~10% of total IOQM marks as a baseline (not the only criterion)
- Category A: Classes 8–11 · Category B: Class 12
- Region-wise selection applied on top of the score threshold
- Final RMO-to-INMO selection criteria are released fresh by HBCSE each cycle

Exam Pattern and Scoring
- Format: 6 questions, fully subjective/descriptive
- Duration: 3 hours
- Every answer requires a complete written proof, not just a final value
- Mode: offline, pen-and-paper — no calculators or aids
- Marking is done by expert evaluators on proof quality, not just the final answer
- Partial credit is given for partially correct reasoning
- A nonzero score is required just to be considered for INMO — but isn't sufficient alone
- Top ~30 (Category A) + 5 girls' quota + top 6 (Category B) per region advance to INMO

RMO is stage two of India's five-stage route to the International Mathematical Olympiad:
