What is AIME ?
The American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME) is one of the most prestigious high school math competitions in the United States. Administered by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA), it serves as the critical second step on the competitive pathway toward the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO).
Unlike introductory math challenges, the AIME is strictly invite-only, meaning students must earn their spot by placing among the top performers nationwide in the AMC 10 or AMC 12 exams.
Eligibility Criteria
- Students cannot register directly for the AIME.
- To participate, students must first qualify AMC 10/AMC`12 by scoring high
- AMC 10: Typically, the top 2.5% to 8% of all test-takers are invited.
- AMC 12: Typically, the top 5% to 15% of all test-takers are invited.
- USAMTS: Exceptionally high performers on the USA Mathematical Talent Search (USAMTS) may also receive an invitation
- Can participate from any country.
Exam Pattern and Scoring
- Exam Mode :Paper-based (most locations)
- Number of Questions: 15 questions
- Time Duration: 180 minutes
- Question Type: 15 short questions (non MCQ)
- Answer style : Integers from 000 to 999
- Correct Answer: +1 point
- Incorrect Answer: 0 points
- Unanswered Questions: 0 points
- There is no negative marking
- Total Score: 15 points
- Calculators allowed : No
AIME core syllabus
- Algebra: Quadratic equations, polynomials, inequalities, functions, and sequences
- Geometry: Euclidean geometry, coordinate geometry, trigonometry, and vectors
- Number Theory: Divisibility, prime numbers, modular arithmetic, and Diophantine equations
- Combinatorics: Counting principles, permutations, combinations, and probability
Exam date and Registration
- The AIME is typically held in early February, with two separate dates offered: AIME I and AIME II
- Students may only take one of these exams per year
- Registration: There is no personal registration for the AIME. Once you qualify through the AMC, your school's AMC coordinator or a designated testing center will automatically register you for the exam
