What is NSEJS ?
The National Standard Examination in Junior Science (NSEJS) is India's premier science Olympiad examination for school students. It serves as the first stage of the Indian Olympiad Programme conducted by the Indian Association of Physics Teachers (IAPT) on behalf of the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE), TIFR.
Students who qualify NSEJS move on to subsequent stages, eventually competing for a place in the Indian Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO) team that represents India internationally.
Eligibility Criteria
- Must be studying in Class 8, 9, or 10 (depending on the official notification).
- Should not have completed Class 10 before the specified academic year
- Must satisfy the age criteria announced by IAPT
- Must be eligible to hold an Indian passport and be residing and studying in India
- Students cannot appear for NSEJS and any other National Standard Examination (like NSEP, NSEC, NSEB, or NSEA) in the same year
Exam Pattern and Scoring
- Exam Mode : Paper-based (OMR based)
- Number of Questions: 60 questions
- Time Duration: 120 minutes
- Question Type: Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs)

- Section A (48 questions): Single correct answer. (+3 for correct, -1 for incorrect)
- Section B (12 questions): One or more correct answers. (+6 if all correct options are selected and no incorrect options are marked. No marks or penalty otherwise)
- Total Score: 216 points
- Subjects Covered: Physics, Chemistry, Biology & Mathematics
- Language: English and Hindi
- Calculators allowed : No
NSEJS core syllabus
- The syllabus is broadly equivalent to the CBSE Secondary School Level (up to Class 10). However, the questions require a significantly higher conceptual depth and application than school exams
