What is IMO ?
The International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO) conducted by the Science Olympiad Foundation (SOF) is one of the world's largest mathematics competitions for school students. It is designed to enhance logical reasoning, mathematical thinking, analytical ability, and problem-solving skills.
Every year, millions of students from thousands of schools across India and several other countries participate in the examination.Whether you are preparing for future competitive exams like JEE, SAT, AMC, NTSE, or simply want to strengthen your mathematical foundation, the SOF IMO provides an excellent platform.
Eligibility Criteria
- Study in Class 1 to Class 12
- Are enrolled in a recognized school
- Level 1: Open to all students from classes 1 to 12 who are enrolled in a school recognized by the SOF
- Level 2: Only students from classes 3 to 12 who qualify from Level 1 are eligible, generally top rank holders. There is no Level 2 for classes 1 and 2
Exam Pattern and Scoring
- Exam Mode : Offline-based (OMR based)
- Number of Questions:

- Classes 1-4 : 35 questions
- Classes 5-12 : 50 questions
- Time Duration: 60 minutes
- Question Type: Multiple-choice (5 options per question)
- Correct Answer: +1 point, +2/3 point for Achievers section questions
- Incorrect Answer: 0 points
- Unanswered Questions: 0 points
- There is no negative marking
- Total Score: 40 marks for Classes 1-4, 60 marks for Classes 5-12
- Calculators allowed : No
IMO core syllabus
The exam consists of four core sections:
- Logical Reasoning: Verbal and non-verbal reasoning topics such as Patterns, Analogy, Coding-Decoding, Mirror Images, Direction Sense, Blood Relations, and Embedded Figures.
- Mathematical Reasoning: Core academic math including Number Systems, Fractions, Geometry, Mensuration, Data Handling, Algebra, Trigonometry, and Probability (depending on the grade).
- Everyday Mathematics: Practical math applications based on the topics under the Mathematical Reasoning syllabus.
- Achievers Section: Higher-Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) questions covering core concepts with deeper analytical twist.
Exam date and Registration
- The IMO is usually conducted during: October, November, December eyery year
- Registration is done through schools only.
- Individual registrations are generally not accepted.
- Schools interested in participating can register with SOF and enroll their students.
