What is AMC 10/12 ?
The American Mathematics Competitions (AMC 10 and AMC 12) are the premier high school math championships managed by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA). Achieving a high score on these exams is one of the most prestigious ways for high schoolers to showcase exceptional problem-solving skills, significantly boosting college applications to top-tier universities like MIT, Caltech, Stanford, and Ivy League schools
Eligibility Criteria
- AMC 10 Eligibility: Open to students in Grade 10 or below, and who are under 17.5 years old on the competition date.
- AMC 12 Eligibility: Open to students in Grade 12 or below, and who are under 19.5 years old on the competition date.
- Can participate from any country.
Exam Pattern and Scoring
- Exam Mode : Online / Paper-based (via registered test centers/schools)
- Number of Questions: 25 questions
- Time Duration: 75 minutes
- Question Type: Multiple-choice (5 options per question)
- Correct Answer: +6 point
- Incorrect Answer: 0 points
- Unanswered Questions: +1.5 points
- There is no negative marking
- Total Score: 150 points
- Calculators allowed : No
AMC 10 core syllabus
Covers high school mathematics up to Grade 10, excluding calculus:
- Advanced Algebra: Sequence and series, systems of linear and non-linear equations, complex polynomials, and coordinate geometry.
- Synthetic Geometry: Advanced triangle properties, circle theorems, areas of complex figures, and 3D spatial geometry.
- Number Theory: Prime factorization, modular arithmetic, divisibility rules, and properties of integers.
- Combinatorics & Probability: Permutations and combinations, binomial theorem, inclusion-exclusion principle, and geometric probability.
AMC 12 core syllabus
Covers the entire high school curriculum up to Grade 12, excluding calculus:
- All AMC 10 Topics (at a significantly harder difficulty tier)
- Trigonometry: Advanced trigonometric identities, laws of sines and cosines, and complex wave behaviors.
- Advanced Algebra: Logarithms, complex numbers, matrices, and functional equations.
- Advanced Geometry: Conic sections (ellipses, parabolas, hyperbolas) and advanced analytical geometry.
Exam date and Registration
The AMC 10/12 is offered in two distinct testing periods
- AMC 10/12 A: Typically held in Early November.
- AMC 10/12 B: Typically held in Mid-November (or January depending on the year).
- Students can take both A and B versions to maximize their chances of qualifying for the next round but you cannot take an AMC 10 and an AMC 12 in the same testing year
