What is AMC 8?
The American Mathematics Competition 8 (AMC 8) is a 25-question, 40-minute, multiple-choice exam in middle school mathematics, organised by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA). It's the longest-running and most prestigious math competition series in the US.
AMC 8 is the foundational level of the pyramid that leads all the way to the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) — it builds the problem-solving base students later carry into AMC 10/12, AIME, and beyond.
Eligibility Criteria
- Open to students in Grade 8 or below
- Must be under 14.5 years old on the day of the contest
- Advanced students in Grades 4–7 are welcome to attempt it early
- No prior competition experience required
- Each student may take AMC 8 only once per year

- Questions arranged in increasing order of difficulty
- Calculators, phones, and smartwatches are not allowed
- Correct answer: 1 point
- Wrong or blank answer: 0 points — no negative marking
- Maximum score: 25 points
- Since there's no penalty for guessing, students should attempt every question
AMC 8 Syllabus / Topics Covered
AMC 8 draws entirely from a typical middle school math curriculum — no trigonometry or calculus. Problems test reasoning and creative application, not just formulas. Broad topic areas:
Number Sense
- Fractions, decimals, ratios
- Factors, multiples, divisibility
- Order of operations
- Elementary number theory
Equations & Word Problems
- Linear equations & expressions
- Proportional reasoning
- Basic functions
- Multi-step word problems
Elementary Geometry
- Angles, triangles, polygons
- Pythagorean Theorem
- Area, perimeter, volume
- Spatial visualization
Combinatorics
- Counting principles
- Basic probability
- Permutations & arrangements
Applied Reasoning
- Estimation strategies
- Reading graphs & tables
- Everyday-application problems
Exam Date & Registration
- AMC 8 is held during a testing window in January each year
- Registration typically opens in Fall (Sept–Oct) of the preceding year
- Students don't register individually on the MAA site — registration is handled by schools or approved testing centers
- If your school doesn't host it, a registered center (like ours) can register you
